Bad Weather Conditions: A Plan for Your Horse
Do you have a plan for your horses during times of inclement weather?

One of the most common questions is whether horses are safer inside or outside during severe weather. The truth is that there are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Inside: A well-built barn can provide protection from hail, high winds, flying debris and lightning. However, barns can also be vulnerable to storm damage, flooding or fire resulting from lightning strikes.
Outside: Horses have the ability to move away from
danger and are less likely to become trapped if a structure fails.
However, they may be exposed to lightning, hail, falling trees or limbs and flying debris.
Securely built run-in sheds provide horses with a safe place to escape harsh weather. When properly constructed and maintained, they offer protection while still allowing horses the freedom to move in and out as they choose.
Every farm is different, so consider your facilities, pasture conditions, and the specific weather threats expected when making your decision.
Additional storm-preparedness reminders:
• Secure loose items around the property.
• Ensure horses have access to fresh, clean water.
• Avoid turnout in areas with dead or weakened trees.
• Monitor weather alerts and have a plan in place should conditions deteriorate rapidly.
