What is EOTRH in Horses?

Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a progressive, painful dental disease most commonly seen in horses over 15 years of age. It primarily affects the front incisors and canine teeth, causing the tooth roots to break down while abnormal cementum builds up around them.

 

Horses with EOTRH may show signs such as reluctance to bite carrots or treats, dropping feed, bad breath, swollen gums, loose or fractured teeth, or weight loss. Unfortunately, there is no treatment to stop the disease from progressing.

 

In advanced cases, extraction of the affected teeth is the most effective way to relieve pain, and most horses experience a significant improvement in comfort and quality of life after recovery.
