Measuring tapes are simple devices used to obtain a weight of your horse. Knowing your horseโ€™s weight is just as important for a vet as it is for a horse owner when it comes to feeding, deworming, medication dosing, and record-keeping! You can use a horse weight tape; however, measuring using the horseโ€™s heart girth and body length has been shown to be more accurate.

1. Wrap the measuring tape around the heart girth, just behind the front legs and over the withers.
2. Make sure itโ€™s snug but not too tight to get the best reading.
3. Measure the horseโ€™s body length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
3. Use the formula: Heart Girth x Heart Girth x Length รท 300.
